Sunriver is
built on the site of Camp Abbot, a World War II training facility. In
1944, the camp was closed and most of the buildings razed. The Officers
Club building, with its impressive timber architecture, has been
preserved and renovated into the Great Hall of Sunriver.
Built on the meadows along the upper Deschutes River and in the adjacent Pine forest, Sunriver is a beautiful luxury resort and recreation community. Condominium construction started in 1968 and lot sales for home construction began the next year. World class golf, fly fishing, whitewater rafting, hiking, biking and skiing in this tranquil environment attract many visitors in addition to the 4,700 fulltime residents. Sunriver is an unincorporated community governed and operated by a homeowners association (SROA). Sunriver has its own water and sewer systems, police and fire departments, an airport and shopping mall and visitors lodging. The Sunriver Nature Center is located on 7 acres near Aspen Lake. It features native plants and animals and exhibits on the natural and human history of the area. An observatory with a 20" telescope and a "Starport" are also part of the center.
