BACK         POP. 14,960    REDMOND, OREGON   ELEV. 3,077

In 1904 Frank and Josephine Redmond homesteaded in this area and became namesake to the community, which was incorporated in 1910. By that time the population had reached 216 and the downtown was lined with storefronts and a volunteer fire department had been formed. The next year electric lights and the Oregon Trunk Railroad reached Redmond. The Redmond Hotel was built in 1928 and was billed as the finest hotel east of the Cascades. By 1930, the population had reached 1,000, by 1940, 1,876. In 1943 the US Air Force established a training base at Roberts Field to train B17 and P38 pilots. There, after the war, commercial air service began.

Today, Redmond is a thriving community. Being in the heart of one of the finest recreation areas in the West and having such a wonderful climate, its not hard to understand why it has become the fastest growing community in Oregon. Business relocations to the area are up, and the new state of the art, world class fairgrounds and convention center near the region's only commercial airport attracts many visitors.
