La Pine is a rural oriented,
unincorporated community in the south end of Deschutes County. Fur
trader Finian McDonald camped near where La Pine is now in 1825. That
same year, explorer Peter Skene Ogden passed through the area, and in
1848, the John C. Fremont military party explored the area. In 1852,
engineers explored the area looking for a route over the Cascade
Mountains. B.J. Pengra homesteaded here in 1870, and the town was
founded in 1900. Lured by the "almost free" land, the area was soon populated by stockman and loggers. In 1910, lots were selling for $50. By 1917, La Pine had a bank, a saloon, a livery stable, a mercantile store, a grocery store, a blacksmith shop, a school, a hardware store, a filling station, and a newspaper. There was plenty of timber and pulpwood to be cut, dirt with no rocks, and good hunting and fishing. Now, La Pine is a very pleasant, affordable community. It is surrounded by National Forest and BLM land with nearly unlimited recreation potential. Lakes, rivers, mountains and the desert are just outside town. All services and shopping are right here, too. The schools are part of the Bend-La Pine School District: http://www.bend.k12.or.us/
