Bend was
founded in 1900 by Alexander Drake. In 1904 an irrigation system was
completed and Bend began to develop rapidly. It was incorporated
in 1905 with about 250 people and 80 buildings.
By 1920, the
population was over 5,000, with timber, ranching and agriculture
providing many jobs. Long known as a hunting and fishing paradise, in
the 1950s community leaders began developing the area's recreational
opportunities. By
the 1960s, the forest products industry was in decline. Now, the mills are
mostly gone. The stacks of the de-commissioned power house near the old
Brooks-Skanlon mill site serve as a flag pole, and many of the mill
buildings have been converted to the fine shops and restaurants of what
is now known as "The Old Mill District."
Though several large
modern malls are located around the area, downtown Bend is still small
town USA. However, now fine boutiques, art galleries and artesian shops have replaced the "5 & Dimes", soda fountains and drug stores of yesteryear.
With the wide array of recreational
opportunities and the natural beauty of the area, there is an abundance
of luxury and vacation homes. From world-class skiing at Mt. Bachelor to
the 25 golf courses within an hours drive, there's plenty of quality
recreation and leisure activities. Up-scale living has come to Bend in a
big way. Come see why.
